NOTES 159 Page 47. यमनियमासन°. For an excellent popular descrip tion of these accessories to nirvikalpakasamadhi, in the Yoga System from which the definitions are taken, see Sub. Asst. Surgeon Paul's Treatise on Yoga Phi. losophy (2nd edn. Benares, 1882). Khecharimudra, Mulabandha, the varieties of Kumbhaka and asana, and other interesting practices of Yogins, are there clearly explained. See also Translation of Sarvadar sanasangraha (Tribners Oriental Series), Hathayoga pradipika (Nirnaya sagara Press, Bombay, 1889), and bhe last chapter of Saradatilaka (Benares). The षट्चक्र of the commentary (line 16) is a set of six mystical circles on the body, in the region of the susumna, and is here said to consist of स्वाधिष्ठान, मणिपूर, अनाहत, विशुद्ध, आज्ञा and 'निर्वाण. I can find no authority, however, for regarding the last mentioned as a chakra. Under the word चक्र, the St. Petersburg and Prof. Monier Williams' Lexicons and the Vachas patyam, give the first place to मूलाधार and exclude निर्वाण altogether. So, also, the Tantrasar (p. 13a of Benares edition) in its description of तारापूजा In the Goraksasataka, too, आधार, as it is there called, comes first. According to the Vichaspatyam (s. V. मूलाधार ), the muladhara , is one of the circles, and also a triangular space which it describes thus:–‘नाभिलिङ्गयो- र्मध्ये तस्य हि शरीरस्य सकलनाडीनां मूलस्थानवात्तथात्वम् । ‘मूलाधारे त्रिकोणाख्य इच्छाज्ञानक्रियात्मके। मध्ये स्वयम्भुलिङगं तु कोटिसूर्यसम प्रभं", इत्युक्तलक्षणे त्रिकोणाकारे तत्रोक्ते ॥ Nirvana is described in the same Lexicon as a mantra, and an explana tory passage is cited from the Agamavilasatantra, a portion of which is as follows:- ‘कुल्लुकां मूर्ध्नि सञ्जष्य हृदि सेतुं विचिन्तयेत् । महासेतुं विशुद्धे तु पोडशारे समुद्धरेत् । मणिपूरे तु निर्वाणं महाकुण्डलिनीमधः” ॥ Then follows a description of the mantra.
