27-11-1a1 TALE. - Lasar Fasaralysis: propriateness of अर्थ, Mahimabhatta, has, in his invaluable worls consisting of three Yinna1Sas, invented the Anuraana Schod! 2.12d given an exhaustive treatment on the inappropriateness of शब्द, The learned author has said. । ( 1 ) It 15 evident fiom the above that the author has, in his desire to acquire fame all at once, 115ten the vyaktiviveka without looking into the japana at all “दर्पणो हृदयर्पणाख्यो भवनि- बसग्रन्थ.” so says the corrimentator. It would appear therefore that our author desiled to attain, unaided by the 12lbou's of the author of the Darpana, the full glory of vanquishing the Dhvani school, By “सह्सा' is meant before there was time eno1tgh for the reputation of Darpanakara as a vigorous opponent of the Dhvani school to spread It follows there- fore that the interval between the composition of these two works is very Small, Tikat the author has not resorted to thie Darpana while writing this work is also evident from the absence of any reference to any passage of any writers having attacked the LJhvani school. The only reference *“एवञ्च भृढ़ना- यकेन द्विवचन यद् दूषित तद् गजनिमीलिकयैव”,(p 19) referred to the criticism adopted by Bhattenayaka in regard to the duality of sense 12 the definition of ध्वनि 15 to a passage in the Lociana' अyhere the passage occurs, It therefore considerably strengtaens the v1ey that the author has not seen the Darpana. The author of the Darpana which is referred to as having sounde the death knell of the Dhvani school may be inferred to have been Bhattarnayaka who 15, 17 this passage, said to be an opponent of the Dhivani school. | The author 1s entitled to the greatest praise at our hands in expounding new and original ideas and in supporting his theories with Cogent reasons suited to the nature of the sub-
