AMARAKOŚA १ has the well-known meaning of 'in different ways as well as without'. To illustrate the latter meaning Sūrin says, नाना नारीं निष्फला लोकयात्रा | The line has a double significance, for it applies to the per- formance of dharma in participation with the life-partner as well as a life of pleasure in her company (III. 4. 3). The same kind of humorous suggestion is seen in the explanation of the word riktham (wealth), as that which (being hard earned by the father) is squandered by the sons: रिच्यते पुत्रादिना निःसार्यत इति रिक्थम् । (p. 607) xxxviii Some words can convey a clear picture to the mind only if a full description of the object is given:1 navanītam navod- dhrtam does not convey a picture of the object in question, namely fresh butter. Here, Sūrin gives a full description: नवं तत्कालदघ्नो मन्थनानन्तरं नीतं नवनीतम् ; and मथनानन्तरं दध्नो विनिर्गतस्य सर्पिषः प्रकृतिभूतस्य सारांशस्य नामनी । (p. 585) Similar is the case with prthuka which is parched and flattened rice. सार्द्रान् व्रीहीन् भृष्टान् कृत्वा उलूखले मुसलेन कुट्टयित्वा भक्ष्यत्वेन कल्पितानां नामनी । (p. 582) The somewhat heavy dependence on such an established authority as Svāmin sometimes lands him in questionable derivations. The word vitunnakam (coriander seed) is derived by Svāmin as: ¹ Hence Bhavabhūti's humorous description of a horse in Uttara. (IV.27) to ascetic boys who had not seen such an animal before (paścāt puccham vahati...).
