lxiv AMARAKOŚA Some writers, Malli. says, prefer the word turturaḥ for dhuttūra (white thorn-apple) (p. 261). The blue jay (casa) can also be căsa as the well-known Rabhasakośa sanctions it (p. 340). The word yuvanaḥ (young men) is akārānta as well, for Tri- vikrama alludes to it, there being such usages in literature. युवानः संस्कृतेऽपि इति त्रिविक्रमवचनाद् अकारान्तो युवानशब्दोऽप्यस्ति । युवानैः' इति । (p. 386) प्रयोगश्च- In vrate rambhas tu vainavaḥ all well-known commentators take vrate as the loc. of vrata (vow). Malli. ingeniously takes it as vrateh and says that the repha in the samdhi is dropped by Panini's rule 'ro ri'. To emphasize the existence of the word vrati he gives illustrations such as vrateh paläśaḥ' and 'vrater venudandah... But in no well-known lexicon, ancient or modern, is that word found and even in Malli's 'bible', the Vaijayanti, this word is not traceable. The twang made by a bow in battle is visphäraḥ; Malli. says visphäraḥ is also correct as the sutra sphurati. . .' (VIII. 3. 76) sanctions it optionally (p. 547). The word musala (pestle) may also be muşala (p. 569) and heman for gold is also hema (p. 610). Panasa (jack tree), Malli. notes is phanasa according to some and panasa in the opinion of others. ( पवर्गद्वितीयादिरिति केचित् । पणस इति टवर्गमध्यम इति केचित् । (p. 251) The sun is bāḥkara and ahahkara in addition to bhaskara and ahaskara (p. 70). Malli. is not lacking in intellectual courage, for he does not hesitate to criticize when necessary the views of previous commentators. But he is not distinguished for moderation of language. Some have interpreted the word hāhā to be an imitation of the musical sounds ever present on the lips of Gandharva-s (semi-divine musicians) and declare that the word is not capable of derivation. Condemning such ig- norance, Malli. says:
