The work ends with the verse : 2. Its date The date of composition of this commentary should be about A.D. 1248, as could be presumed from the author indicating this date as the starting point for the computation of the planets and giving as zero-corrections the planetary positions at this date. (Saka 1170=A.D. 1248) 81strficiatist: satira (Upodghata-prakarana to the com., vs. 5). Further down, in the same section, Suryadeva lays down the same in six verses : etc. Since he wrote the commentary towards A.D. 1248, Suryadeva (b. 1191) should have composed it when he was 57 years old. 3. Aim of the commentary Towards the beginning of the Introductory Section (Upodghataprakarana) prefixed to his commentary, Suryadeva refers to an earlier commentary by Prasastidhara (c. A.D. 10th cent.), a Kashmirian astronomer on the Laghumanasa' and adds that though Prasastidhara 1. A ms. of this com. is available in the Sarasvati Bhandar of the Sanskrit College, Mysore, being Ms. No. 739, in Grantha script, and another in the Calcutta University Library.
