Updramadhikaragra (PMSIII. 3.7). Nor can it be said that
" for the sake of many " the few found in the beginning are to
be rejected according to the principle enunciated in the Sutra
" Those of the larger number must have their conmon
subsidiaries." (PMS. XI ji. 24); because in the Sitra (PMS
XII. ii. 23) it is said that tha{ alone which is first" is
stronger than those at the end, though they a:e larger in
number. Therefore thereis no reason at ail for over-riding the
primary sense of the word boarge.
Siddhanta : The reply (to the above objection) is as follows: The word starge signifies liberation (abode of libera tion) only through its primary significanceThe Mimधैthsakas have stated in the Star gadkham ada karatd {PSVIi ) that the word stor geaccording to the priuciple Ninthid-७ ४esha +y%y¢ (that the coguition does not grasp the principal without grasping the attributes, signifies only delight (prii) and not the substauce that grants delight (priti-visista-draya.
Further they raise the issue that though it is true that the word socrga signifies delight according to the principle albove-mentioned it is yet to be established that it signifies that delight which is enjoyable in another body at another place, it cannot be said that the supplementary passage "That in which there is no heat etc. , leads to the conclusion th=t the word svarga used in the injuncting texts, signifies the parti cular kind of delight, because there there is no room for the principle " hat which is doubtful is to be determined with the help of the rest of the pasage " (PMS. H. iv23), since there is no doubt here as to the significance which has been already determined as having reference to delight in general (pritimatrs) to which issue they (themselves) reply as follows: No doubt it is true the word segrege has its signif cance determined according to common usage itself.
