INTRODUCTION

FIRST ADHYAYA

It appears lowever that importance is attached to the story of Naciketa5 in the first adhy¥ya, whereas importance is attached to instruction regarding Reality (tgttog, the means it and the result (fruit, heatas a whole in the second adhyayaFrom this we find that this Upanisad contains, as is 1staf in a Upanisadsthe three instructions on taff, it¢ and purushrith¢ without which to vidya can be followed, not to speak of being understood. 1. Vad. The story of Nacikets after his having been offered to Death by his father vjasravas is contained in this section. After having gone to the abode of Death he had to wait for three days ere Death returned and in lieu of this waiting and fastiug for three days as a guest, he was offered three boous, The story after describing the first two boons which pertain to the earth (r) and heaven ($var ga) introduces the philosophical third, Moka or libera tion from the roInd of existence in earth and heaven. Nac. |ketas | refused to entertain the third purushrig nately desire (ra), and withstood the temptations offered to him by Yatma in this regard. This rejection of the Brit-purugarth¢ is shown to be of the preyes or mere pleasant which is other than and inferior to the reasthe good, which aloEe a to be soughtand this reyas is tiberation-getting. No true philosophical instruction can have effectiveness unless the @Ma-brukarte is totally rejected, as Yama himself points out in this story in the opening lines of the second pal, it may however be asked as to what difference there is between the second and the third boons inasmtch as according It may be pointed ou1 here that it in the Kenopanizad the story•iyth is found in the third section, which iluntrate the , truth, enanciated in the earlier two bection, here the story anyth come at the very beginning of the Upauidad and its inner meaning elaborated in the second adhyaya The Ken insists upon howing that all activity proceeds frorm and in Austained by the Brahnan : here it is phen that all action for to be totally conBecrated to the Divine alone who is the inner ruler inanortal, eapable of being known ithin the hear Along with the oul, thnt in also importa, a jtadotrols U+jec. 2 /.
