KATHOPANSAD

to Raigamanuja s¢g refers to a st¢rgy that ie identical with "The eternai abode of Vispu " and should be considered to be identical with the Renopanisad's final links @IMonta-star ga-lokajeye. In the Tait Brahmata-story of Naciketas, the second boon refers to dkarta that is the fult effectiveness of sacrificial perforunance, (tato vg tasyesable naasiyete) for the sake ot which Yama teaches Naciketas ide Naciketa-Fire even as in the Upanisad here. The third boon in the Brईhnana however refers to Immortality-freedom fron re•death--punar•nty--a point also noticed in the second boon in the Upanisad I. 1.18cd. Yama in the Brahmapa teaches that the Naciketa-fire itself secures that end, thus confirming the view that the Upanisad has clubbed together the second And third boons there to form one here. Thus there has arise a new questiou as to whether the soul exists at all in or after attaining the state of immortality, and as to how it then exists

The tiird boon asked by Naciketas could not be answered without a clear understanding of what the question is about The question about the existence of the conl after death does not refer to the existence or non-existence of the soul as such ,* but to the nature of existence of the sou at liberation, that is, the nature of the liberated soul (nuktaand the nature of that which it attains, and the means to that final or peak•attain uent (baran pcdom). Therefore we can see that the Upanisad is a logical development of the Brahnapa's third boon. Unless we take this question in this way, Vama's answer contained in the II. 12 cannot be leld to be releval

I. Val. The first portion of this vec up to Mantra ।। is also an introduction to Yama's answer to the third question,

1. Sri Krishna Prem conwiders that it refers to the nature of the Freed or 'passed over'self, whether it could be referred to as Is or Is-not; the Upanisad definitely answers that such a one 1s (asti)for it is here that there needs to be doubt

2. There is no place here for the Buddhist view of general Surya, or । I clear that it really refers to the existence of a liberated eparate ui as a bpty १ ५eter it non-into Ar:ag atterly merged in the O५e Being.
