owing to the special attention paid by the Western scholars to Oriental Studies during this latter half. of the last century, our scholars were awakened to a sense of this defect. A number of Indian scholars. began to devote their attention to the uphill task. of unveiling the past by inaking a special study. of oriental languages. And we are glad to state that their efforts in this direction have met with success. A mass of numismatic and paleographic evidence has been brought to bear upon the solution of the vexed question regarding the personal history of Kalidasa and the age in which he livel. But inspite of the laborious and laudable efforts of Oriental Scholars-both Eastern & Western in finding out a solution of these vexed problems, they have not yet reached the region of certainty Taking advantage of this uncertainty', the author: ship of several productions of inferior quality is foisted upon Kalidasa. After careful investigations and critical analysis by scholars it is now agreed generally that the following seven Works alone are the products of the inaster-mind of; Kalidas:1. '1) Shakuntala, 2) Vikramorvashiya, (3) Malavikiynimira, 14 ) Raguvamsha, (5) Kumar- silmbhava, !6) Meghaduta, and (7) Ritu--Sanhara. Kalidasa himself has observed reticence in his works about his own personality and the age he lived in. For the purposes of investigations the scholars have, therefore, to draw upon the materials suppliecl ini his works, the accounts furnished by foreign travellers, inscriptions, munisma ties and upon every other, available- Materia. calculated to help them in that direction.
