Both• give accuracy to thought aga sharpness tointellect and create the habit of precise and clear judgment. , These are qualities which are so necessary in all fields of intellectual pursuit. I remember when I was studying at the Deccan College in 1918we often used to leet Sir Ramakrishna Bhandarkar in the course of his evening walks along the Deccan College road. In one of the talks that I then hadःwith himhe asked me whether I had studied Bhattoji's !" Siddhantakaumud. On my answering I had studied it in partshe exclaimed, " What, Inparts' only! I never expected this answer from a son of Balacharya! (Sir Ramakrishna was on familiar terms with my father) I have known four generations of your family and I know your people have reduced yakarana to the position of a drawer of water in your house. Young man, Vyakarata forms the basis of Sanskrit scholarship and I shall never call "a man Sanskrit schola unless he has thoroughly studied the Siddhantakaumudi. These words of the venerable old scholar made a lasting impression on my mind and I still remember very vividly indeed the whole scene. I have 'recalled this personal incident just to show the importance which Si Ramakrishna attachesand which as a matter of fact belongsto the study of Vyakarana.
