Mandana also supports the doctrine of Joanatés, but certain features of this doctrine as pro pounded by him come into direct conflict with Sankara's views in this matter. Brahman-realisation completely destroys the accumu lated arna of the past that has not yet fructified, and it prevents any future accumulation of karaBut there is a special type of the past eracalled prirabdha, which has fructified and begun to bear fruit; and this kind of r na, according to Sankara 89 , is a live force, which must be allowed to work itself out through its own inevitable workings even in the case of a jidia, who has realised himself to be Brahman. Such a jidni, free from unfructified karna and: living out only his fructified karma without being infuenced and bound by it, is called a jtuaamukta-one who is liberated and yet alive. Sankara maintains that there are numerous instances of high-souled jtuarmukas 1, like Apantarata mas reincarnated as Krsna-dvaipayana, Vasistha reincarnated as Maitravarupa, Sanatkumara reincarnated as Skanda, and Daksa ।। andNarada reincarnated in many a corporeal form; that they are all addrikas who are charged by the Lord with the privileged duty of rendering various forms of service in the worlds of men and gods, in accordance with the nature and strength of their firucti fied arna; and that, while such mannuktas are not in any way affected and bound-by the workings of their brarabdaand live continuously in the bliss of their spiritual realisation, their fructi fied karma may come to an end with the death of the body in which they have come by Brahman-realisation or it may lead to
