EIGHTH DISCOURSE.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
किं तद्ब्रह्म किमध्यात्मं किं कर्म पुरुषोत्तम ।
अधिभूत च किं प्रोक्तमधिदैवं किमुच्यते ॥ १ ॥
Arjuna said :
What is that ETERNAL, what SELF-knowledge, what Action, O Purushottama? And what is declared to be the knowledge of the Elements, what is called the know ledge of the Shining Ones ? ( 1 )
कि what ; तत् that ; ब्रह्म Brahman; किं what ; अध्यात्मं Adhyatma ; किं what; कर्म karma ; पुरुषोत्तम = पुरुषेषु उत्तम among men, 0 best; अधिभूतं adhibhuta ; च and ; किम् what ; प्रोक्तम् declare ; अधिदैवम् adhidaiva ; किम् what; उच्यते is called.
अधियज्ञः कथं कोऽत्र देहेऽस्मिन्मधुसूदन ।
प्रयाणकाले च कथं ज्ञेयोऽसि नियतात्मभिः ॥२॥
What is knowledge of Sacrifice in this body, and how, O Madhusudana ? And how at the time of forth going art Thou known by the SELF-controlled ? (2)
अधियज्ञः adhiyajna : कथं how; कः who ; अत्र here ; देहे in body ; अस्मिन् this ; मधुसूदन O Madhusudana ; प्रयाणकाले in (at) the time of departure ; च and ; कथं how ; ज्ञेयः to be known ; असि art (thou) ; नियतात्मभिः= नियतः आत्मा येषाम् तैः controlled, self, whose, by them.
