He could produce anything at a moment's notice. One night when be had. gone to Ranganatha's temple for worship, some who wanted to question bis right to the title of Kavitarkikasimha said that he who composed 1000 slokas within that night on one subject would alone be entitled to that dignity. Alagiamanavala Perumal Nainar, a brother of Pillailokacbarya, offered to compose 1000 slokas in honour of the lotus-feet of Ranganatha. Our author undertook to compose the same number of slokas on the sandals underneath the Feet. Within three hours be dictated the Paduka-Sabasram and went to sleep. The other poet was able to compose only 500 slokas in the whole of the night. The next morning the Padukasahasra was read out and applauded by the scholars assembled. The other Acharya did not read out his balf-finished Padakamalasahasram. Our author then modestly said, सूते सूकरयुवती सुतशतमत्यन्तदुर्भगं झटिति । करिणी चिराय सूते सकलमहीपाललालितं कलभम् ॥ "A she-pig begets quickly a hundred miserable little ones. A she-elepbant slowly brings forth one spirited little elephant who is loved by all the kings of the world." The Padukasabasra, though so bastily written, is a most scholarly and beautiful production. It would do credit to any poet. Wben be bad done reading the
