पुटमेतत् सुपुष्टितम्

INTRODUCTION.

I have great pleasure in presenting a new edition of the Lilavati of Bhaskaracharya to the public. This important work on Indian Mensuration was twice edited with solutions and notes by the late Mahamahopadhyay Pandit Sudhakara Drivedi. His extraordinary mathematical genius succeeded in clearing up many difficult points involved in the work. But the notes and solutions were far from exhaustive and systematic. In many places they were meagre and the processes were not fully worked out. With a view to make the book suitable for the requirements of the students, specially for the examines-the present edition has been undertaken. We have added in very easy language an appendix to initiate the students in the modern methods of multiplying, dividing etc. and have offered solutions of all important problems and alternative methods of working out the same problem. It is hoped that if all the examples given here are intelligently worked out, solutions of other similar examples will become comparatively easy. The reader is requested to go through the entire book and the examples which have been put separately, and frame and solve new problems by himself. No pains have been spared to make the book interesting to the learned and the method of froming magic squares has been added at the end. In short, it has been endeavour to make this important Mathematical work useful to those for whom it is meant.

A few words with regard to the illustrious author of the book and we have done. Perhaps there is hardly any scholar of Indian Mathematics who does not know the name of Bhaskaracharya. We learn from the end of the Goladhyaya
