( 68 ) Then another question was raised. It was said that Sat was a very subtle Peirg. How cculd this big uni verse spring from that subtle Feing. Uddalaka caused a banian seed to be brought and broken to at msAn& asked Svetaketu to take one atom and break it fur therwhich he did. Uddalaka put the question to him, “What do you see here ? ” When he replied , 'nothing, sit, he faid to him. Is not this very big tree standing before us, grown from the subtility which vou do not see ? Have faith, boy.१ The seed is not a mere physical entity . If so, it cculd not grow into a living tree. There must be some thing in the seed other than the ator s which make it, which is responsible for its growth into a tree. That thing beirg very su•tle cccld not be seen and yet it has brought about the very big banian trce. Likewise Sat being snlbtle may not be seen and yet we should con ceive It as the cause of this big universe. This is the significance of the example. why should we accept an unseen thing as existing What is seen exists. What is not seen does not exist. Sat not is seennot , . Therefore It does existNo, says Uddalaka. The reasoning is wrorig. Put a quantity of Salt into a vessel full of water and let it dissolve com . pletely in the water. Then can you see the salt with you eves or feel it with touch ? NoCan we on that account deny the presence of salt in the water? Nobecause by tasting the water from any part of the vessel we expe rience the salt. Likewise, we have to hold Sat exists and is present everywhere and in every thing though we can not see it
