2. Advaita Philosophy, when unqualifed, means a systematic thinking in a general way about the origin, existence and end of the world. It seems that the purpose wes tern philosophy is intended to serve is discipline of mind,and devoloping its thinking capacity. But east. ern philosophy devotes itself to showing time way lead- ing to liberation from bondage, from Sushru, the source of all sorts of our saferings. Though this is the common and ultimate aim of all schools of Indian phi. losophy it is only the Vedanta philosophy that is directly and particularly concerned with it. If a man feels tired with his life, present as well as future; such questions as the following ones naturally arise in him; *who am I ? Why am I suffering like this ? Is it possible to be absolutely free from all these ? If so what is the means for it ? Is it avail able for me ? \Vhen he is anxious and grows im patient to have answers to these questions Vedanta comes to help him. Vedanta gives and it is only Vedanta that could give full and satisfactory answers to these and similar questions. Veda means that source of valid knowledge which enables us to know things that could not be known otherwise. It is accepted as an authority only on such things. Things that are known already either by per ception or inference do not fall within the scope of its . teaching. They are excluded from it. Since Vedanta
