वेङ्कटाद्रिनिलयः कमलाकामुकः पुमान् । The sacred liter:ature of the Hindus according to the famous law giver Yajnavalky.1 comprises 14 branches of learning namely, the Vedas, 1he six aur ilarics of the Wodas (Vedangas) and puranas. Nyaya, Dharmasastra९ a11d Mimamsa. The Kalpautra is the most important among the six :uxilaries: the remaining five being Siksha, Vyakarar a. Chchanda४. Nirukta, and Jyautisha. The Kalpa९utras devoted to a systematic exposition of the performance of 11:t various rites enjoined in the Vedas and Smrtis. The Kalpasutrः s have 1hree distinct parts, namely , 11he Srauta, ॥he Smara and the Dharmasutras. The Smarrta Sutras deal with the ries beginning with impregnation (Nisheka) and ending with funeral rites (Ant yeshti). The Srauta Sutra 1reats the various sacrifices such as Ag॥ishtoma, Caturा71asya etc., that the Smara ritcs are t() be performed by the householder (yajarmana) himself with (or without the single consecrated fire known as Aupasanagाi. whcr:as the Srauta rites are to be perfor med by Rwiks in 1hree or fीvt consecrated fres according to the Sakha to which the householder (yajarama) happens to be a volary. The Dharmasutras are busied in giving a set of rules which regulate the duties of 11c house holder with reference to the Society and hiाself and als७ law, both civil and criminl. with 1he construction and measurements of the alters (Wedis) and fre pits (agnikundams) where 0bla'ions are to be offered to the Gods. Likewise a part of १he Smarasutra is called Adhyatma sutra devoted 1० 1he exposition of the science of self i.e., Adhya 1ma sastra. The Kalpasutra which possesses all the three parts is called * Parip00rाma Kalpa Sutra Mahadeva Pandita the commentator of Satyashadha sutra says only six of the Parip00ोIma Kalpasutras of the Krishna. Yajurveda have been in wouge in his time. The author of the A ni, vaiऽya Kalpasutra mentioned as many as eighteen Kalpsutras.
