Preface

This Book, consisting of two parts, intended for the students of standards IV & V.

The stories, adopted in this Book, are extracts, from well known Books like रामायण, महाभारत, कंथासरित्सागर, etc. Many stories, e.g., दक्षमख, लन्कादहन, उषा, etc., which are nowadays being shown on the screen, will naturally be easily intelligible to the student-world. The dialogues, selected from the best Sanskrit dramas like शाकुन्तल, मृच्छकटेिक, विक्रमोर्वशीय, etc., will be found most handy in enhancing the use of Direct Method now in vogue. Several alterations have been made in the original pass ages in order to suit the standards for which this Book is intended.

As a special feature of this Book, various types of Exercises, such as, 'Separate the words ,' ' Fill in the blanks, ' 'Change the voice, ' etc , have been added at the end of each story. In the second part of this Book, which is chiefly meant for standard V, an exercise on Compounds has been added. And the teachers will do well to get these exercises solved by the students.

At the end of some stories general questions have been suggested and the teachers are recommended to ask questions and get their answers in Sanskrit only. Besides these general questions, I had at first given at the end of each story, a number of questions on that story, to give the students a practice in Sanskrit conversation. From the story of श्रीरामचंद्र, questions such as, “ कस्य पुत्रः रामचंद्रः” . “कस्य सुता जानकी " . “ केनापहृता सीता ” .were suggested. On a second thought, however, I omitted these questions, not because I had anything against this method but because I felt that the teachers would easily be able to
