v which the author makes a mention elsewhere : udalkararena paाkriswate (p. 2) 0ur author is generally referred to with the title So71ay], So7८७ut, So71aऽutwar or Co74tir, the last being the Malayalam derivative of the Sanskrit word. A detailed colophon occurring at the end of his B4asya on the Garitapada of the aryabharya, contains a good deal of information about him : The above-quoted passage informs that Nilakantha belonged to the Gargya gotra, was a follower of the 75walayana-stra of the Rgved and was a Blotta. He was the son of Jatavedas and had a younger brother named Sarikara. He had an uncle Jatavedas by name and a. close friend Subrahmanya. He was a performer of the So710 sacrifice. He had composed several works on astronomy, in which subject he had Imade deep and extensive investigations , a fact which is well borne out by his available works. Some more personal details about Nilakaptha seem to be forth coming from a Malayalam work entitled Laghuramayara. This work describes itself as a work of Rama, son of Nilakantha of the Gargya-gotra and resident of Kupdagrama. Cr, the colophon at its end : 1. f, etut sarva7 4paristad 2. 4Bh.
