astronomical works. The codex is dated the 16,99,847 th day of Kali, being the same date as that of A, but the codex is not related to it, since it presents several substantial variants.

 E. Ms. No. 8358-1 of the above Library. This manuscript contains the full text of the work and is in good preservation, but abounds in scribal errors.

 F. Ms. No. 6302 of the India Office Catalogue of Sanskrit and Prakrit Manuscripts (Vol. II, by Keith, p. 775). This is a well preserved manuscript and presents a generally correct text.

 G. Ms. No. 975 of H. H. The Maharaja's Palace Library, Trivandrum, now preserved in the Kerala Univ. Library noted above. This manuscript contains the text as well as the commentary edited here. The manuscript is well preserved and is generally correct, but unfortunately certain portions in it are lost, including the first leaf and portions of the text and commentary of verses 7 c to 16 and 28-32. The codex contains, in continuation, another discursive work of Nilakantha himself, but which is incomplete and is given the title Graha&adigraniha on the basis of its contents.

Relationship of the Manuscripts

 An examination of the variant readings preserved in the above manuscripts makes it possible to classify them into two groups : Mss. A B, C on the one hand and Mss. D, E, F on the other, particularly in view of the following considerations :  (i) an entirely different reading for the latter half of verse 4 ;  (ii) substantial variants in the first half of verse 7, and  (iii) the first half of verse 25 being transposed after 26, in the second group, with the verse numbers correspondingly adjusted in the manuscripts.  The text and commentary in Ms. G agrees with the second group as regards (i), and with the first group as regards (ii) and (iii). It may be noted that the author himself suggests variant readings to his text in the commentary, e.g., my ate to myatam in verse 27, the two expressions indicating slightly different meanings. 1 The closeness of the'
