सामान्यविहेित a general rule, a rule laid down in general which is restricted by special rules after- wards; cf. बाधकेनानेन भवितव्यं सामान्य- विहितस्य विशेषविहितेन M. Bh. on P. II. l.24 Vart. 5, cf also M. Bh, on III.1.94, III. 2.77 etc.

सामान्यातिदेश extended application of a thing to others in general; cf. सामान्यातिदेशे विशेषानतिदेश: । तेन अनद्यतन- भूतरूपे विशेषे विहितयोर्लङ्लिटोर्न 'भूतवच्च' (3.3.932) इत्यनेनातिदेशः । Pari. Sek. Pari. 101.

सामान्यातिदेशपरिभाषा name given to the Paribhasa सामान्यातिदेशे विशेषानतिदेशः Pari. Sekh Pari. 101.

सामान्यापेक्ष referring only to a general thing indicated, and not to any specific instances. The word is used in connection with a Jna- pana or indication drawn from the wording of a rule, which is taken to apply in general to kind- red things and rarely to specific things; cf. इदं च सामान्यापेक्षं ज्ञापकं भावतिङोपि पूर्वमुत्पत्तेः । Pari. sek. on Pari. 50.

सामान्याभिधान denotation of the gen- us factor of a word, as contrasted with द्रव्याभिधान denotation of the individual object; cf. तद्यदा द्रव्याभिधानं तदा बहुवचने भविष्यति, यदा सामान्याभिधानं तदैकवचनं भविष्यति M. Bh. on P. I. 2. 58 Vart. 7.

सामासिक pertaining to a compound; found inside a compound; cf. मा भूतां यासौ सामासिकी विभक्तिस्तस्याम्, यासौ समासाद्विभक्तिस्तस्यां भविष्यतः । M.Bh. on P. VII.1.1; cf. also सामासिकलुकः अप्राप्त्या etc. Par. Sek on Pari. 56.

सामूहिक name given to tad. affixes prescribed in the sense of collec- tion ( समूह ) by the rule तस्य समूह: and the following ones; P.IV.2.37. to 51.

साम्य similarity, homogeneity: descri- bed to be of two kinds- in words and in sense; cf. किं पुनः शब्दतः साम्ये संख्यातानुदेशो भवत्याहोस्विदर्थतः M. Bh. on P. I. 3. 10 Vart 3; cf. also स्थानकरण- कालादिभि: तौल्यम् T. Pr XXIV. 5.

सायण, सायणाचार्य the celebrated Vedic scholar and grammarian of Vijaya- nagar who flourished in the 14th century and wrote, besides the monumental commentary works on the Vedas, a grammatical work on roots and their forms known by the name माधवीया धातुवृत्ति. As the colophon of the work shows, the Dhatuvrtti was written by Sayana- carya, but published under the name of Madhava, the brother of Sayanacarya; cf. इति महामन्त्रिणा मायणसु- तेन माधवसहोदरेण सायणाचार्येण विरचितायां माधवीयायां धातुवृत्तौ...Madhaviya Dha tuvrtti at the end; cf also तेन मायणपुत्रेण सायणेन मनीषिणा । व्याख्येया माधवी चेयं धातुवृत्तिर्विरच्यते । Mad.
