THE FORMATION OF NOUNS 219 is reached (in the Brahmanas) when two non-neuters are com- bined to form a singular collective dvandva : osadhivanaspati- ' plants and trees candratarakd- ‘ moon and stars ustrakhara- 4 camels and asses Adjectival dvandvas are formed by the combination of two adjectives applying to the same noun, and such occur from the Rgveda onwards : nllalohita - ' dark blue and red tdmradhumrd- 4 dusky copper-coloured arundbabhru- 4 red brown krsna - Gabala- 4 speckled black sitosna- 4 lukewarm etc, There are parallels to these in other IE languages (e.g. Gk. XevKonvppos* XcvKopaios, yXvKVTHKpns) and it is likely that in contradistinc- tion to the nominal dvandvas the type is inherited from Indo- European.
